Linda Kaser and Judy Halbert
2020 Vision – No Inequities for BC Learners

Content Appropriate for Modules 2, 3, 4 and 5
Linda Kaser

In their presentation, Linda Kaser and Judy Halbert set up their dream, and their commitment to this dream: for BC to be the first place in the world to have an equitable education system, and to do this by 2020.  Kaser and Halbert believe this work can be done with all BC educators working together.  The presentation is framed around three powers for change that will have the most impact on learners and lead to the 2020 vision: using what is already known will make a difference; using imagination to see pictures of potential; and using the power of relationships with every learner.

Setting the stage: creating the dream scenario

Linda Kaser sets up the presentation by asking if, by 2020, there can be in BC an inequity removing system. In answering this question, Kaser introduces three key questions: When is the best time to do something? Who is the most important person? What is the right thing to do? Kaser profiles three learners, and introduces the three powers for change that educators can focus on right now to move toward the 2020 vision.

Focus Questions

  • What was it that Linda Kaser suggests for her three learners?
  • Identify three learners that you know are struggling.
  • What could you do to make a difference for these three learners?
The three powers for change

Judy Halbert takes an in-depth look at the three powers for change that every educator has the ability to use right now. These powers will make the biggest difference for learners and lead to the 2020 vision of an equitable education system. Power 1: Using what we know right now. This includes the six strategies of formative assessment; the power of cross-age and cross-grade learning; and professional development for teachers. Power 2: Using imagination to see pictures of potential: when is the best time to do something? Power 3: Using the power of our relationships with every learner: providing social and emotional learning when needed, and not giving up on students during transition times.

Focus Questions

Identify strategies you are using now that fit into each of the three powers:

  • Informed Action ( Six strategies of formative assessment; the power of cross-age and cross-grade learning; and professional development for teachers)
  • Using imagination to see pictures of potential: when is the best time to do something?
  • Using the power of our relationships with every learner: providing social and emotional learning when needed, and not giving up on students during transition times.
Question and Answer and Conclusion

Linda Kaser addresses questions from the conference sites and expands on each one (original broadcast). Judy Halbert then goes back to the three questions posed in the beginning (When is the best time to do something? Who is the most important person? What is the right thing to do?), and concludes.

Focus Questions

Wise practice exists in pockets:

  • What needs to happen to create this practice across the systems?
  • What needs to happen in classrooms, schools, districts and provincially to realize this powerful vision for our students?
